We know that for a lot of people, the thought of smiling with a mouthful of metal is enough to put them off Orthodontic treatment altogether. But there’s no need to put up with a less-than-perfect smile – those traditional metal braces we tend to think of are not the only option you have!

Ceramic braces are a great compromise if you want braces for quicker results than plastic aligners but they are a little less obvious in your mouth. Ceramic brackets do the same job as metal ones, they lend themselves well to achieving the fine detailing metal braces are known for and with proper cleaning do not stain as is often thought! Ceramic brackets are more expensive than metal ones.

Many of our teenage and adult patients choose ceramic braces because they’re not as immediately obvious than other braces options. Using a translucent tooth-coloured porcelain bracket, which is almost invisible, they offer the same effective method as metal braces to gently move teeth into their new position.

Ceramic braces are a great compromise if you’re seeking the invisible effect of plastic aligners, but require a stronger, more rapid treatment option than Invisalign ®. They are however more delicate than metal braces, and require additional care to ensure they’re not chipped or fractured when eating, brushing or playing sport.

Relatively fast.

Ceramic braces use the same bracket and archwire system as metal braces to gently guide your teeth into position.

First, we’ll take a series of photos and x-rays of your teeth to help us determine your treatment plan and accurately track your progress. Then, we’ll bond the porcelain brackets to your teeth using glue, place the archwire in the bracket and secure them with elastic bands. Depending on the variety you choose, it’s also possible to use clear elastics and wires in between the brackets, making them even less noticeable.

Once your treatment is underway, we’ll schedule adjustment appointments with you every six to eight weeks. These sessions are usually pretty quick, and will give us a chance to assess your progress and adjust the tension on the arch wires. This is also an important time for us to talk with you about how you are finding the treatment process, and to help make sure you’re keeping up with your at-home care.

Because everyone’s teeth are different, the time you will need to wear the clear ceramic braces will be entirely dependent on your particular treatment plan. Treatment times can be anywhere from 6-18 months. As we go along with your treatment, we will be able to gauge your progress and sometimes shorten or extend your treatment time as needed.

Just like the duration of your treatment, the cost for clear ceramic braces will vary depending on your individual needs. Generally, they will be slightly more expensive than metal braces, in a similar price range to Invisalign®  Aligners.
